So I had the 'saferun' problems whilst installing Mass Effect and I gave the manual install a half hearted go, got really pissed off at EA etc and played the excellent The Witcher instead, well I finished The Witcher the other day and decided to try Mass Effect again. So off to do more googling, I find a reference to the Config utility not showing the repair option on Vista (my OS) and having to run it in compatibility mode so I try this and still no joy, the options are there but do nothing. I then get into checking the log file generated by the startup of the game, and it is complaining about a missing file I google this file and low and behold it's a file that was missing from the main RARs and added to the DataSetup.exe file (which is actually a self extracting exe) but I can't run it because the config repair option only runs on XP. So I open the DataSetup.exe with 7-zip and joy of joys I can see the missing files and copy them to the correct location. Since then the game has ran perfectly. That's so strange.

I don't remember the game ever crashing on either system. There were some draw distance woe's, but I blamed the video card.

Sorry to hear, but that's the craziest install instruction set I've had ever heard. I will admit it makes me not want to buy the game on Steam to test my luck again for when the DLC comes out?
