Below the manual control button there is a square hole. I wonder if this previously had the learn function. Can someone help? Looks like there is a wire going into the square hole.

Is that connected to something? My Merlin is a different model but I had a hell of a time programming after market remotes to it. Worked great when I got them in January but after a few months they started failing every few attempts then after 6 months they began to fail every time. So I tried to reprogram them and it was almost like the learn button refused to teach the remotes despite all the right signs from the unit. It wasn't until I tried the remotes on another Merlin I realised that not all after market remotes branded as Merlin replacements for the little round remotes (like shown in the manual for yours) are the same.

After much cursing I gave up and cleaned the originals, it's amazing how much crud and stuff gets into those little suckers considering they spend so much time in the car and only pressed a few times a day. There are a few openers that look like the 230T but each have different remotes and ways to learn It seems strange that there is even a sticker on it referring to the learn button when there does not seem to be a button. Also strange that they seem to have more than one model with the same number, and the programming for the different models seems to be different. The manual here says that a button on a wired remote can also be used as the learn button, but that does not help if you don't have the wired remote, unless perhaps you can simulate pressing that button by connecting some of the wires that would go to that wired remote. It also gives a procedure to program a remote using an existing remote that is already programmed. However it says that is a feature that has to be enabled in the receiver, and to do that in the first place you need to press, you guessed it. The learn button.
